How does solar work?

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. Here’s a general overview of how solar panels work:

• Sunlight absorption: Solar panels are composed of individual solar cells, typically made of silicon. These cells have a semiconductor material that can absorb photons from sunlight.
• Electron excitation: When sunlight hits the solar cell, it excites the electrons in the semiconductor material. This generates a flow of electrons, creating a direct current (DC) of electricity.
• Electrical current: The solar cells are interconnected, forming a solar panel. Multiple panels are often combined to create a solar array. The DC electricity produced by the panels is collected and sent through electrical conductors.
• Electrical usage: The AC electricity from the inverter can power electrical devices in your home or business. It can be consumed immediately or sent to the electrical grid for credit or future use.
• Net metering (if applicable): If your solar panel system is connected to the electrical grid, you may have a net meter installed. Net metering allows you to receive credits for any excess electricity your system produces. During periods of low solar production, such as at night, you can use these credits to draw electricity from the grid.
